My Mission Statement and Goals

Date: July 21, 2015

_ _ _ _ _ _ Personal Mission Statement_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

I will continue to always live the teachings of the Gospel that I have learned before and on my mission. I will apply all of the of the things that I have learned, and apply them into the rest of my life. I will be one that the Lord can call upon at any time to run an errand for Him, and will do my best not to miss any promptings of the Spirit and act upon them immediately. _ _ _ _ _ _ 100 Things I Have Learned On My Mission _ _ _ _
1) My Heavenly Father, and Jesus Christ truly love me, and they are always there for me, no matter what I say, do, or think.
2) The Scriptures are amazing, and there is great power in them. There is always something new to learn from them and to apply in my life. They contain the answers to all the questions that you will ever need for eternal life. As you show people where they can find the answer and back it up with scriptures, they are so much more willing to change their life immediately. If you don't read the Book of Mormon everyday, then life really sucks. "The Holy Ghost will guide what we say if we study and ponder the scriptures every day. The words of the scriptures invite the Holy Spirit. The Lord said it this way: “Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men” (D&C 11:21) -Henry B. Eyring, Feed My Lambs, October 1997 GC
3) Exact obedience brings miracles and blessings. There is a difference between obeying, and being obedient. I am going to change no matter what, so I can either let those around me have an effect upon me, or I can take matters into my own hands and choose my own destination.
4) We were never told that life would be easy, but that it would be worth it. If things are hard and if it challenges you, then there is something to learn, and it's going to change you. It's only hard until you get up and just do it.
5) God has restored his authority, the Priesthood, to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith. I have seen this priesthood in action numerous times from blessings, to baptism and confirmations, to families being sealed for all time and eternity.  "The power of the Priesthood is magnificent, and it has been restored upon the earth today. Miracles are everywhere to be found when priesthood callings are magnified. When faith replaces doubt, when selfless service eliminates selfish striving, the power of God brings to pass His purposes." -Thomas S. Monson, Our Sacred Priesthood Trust, April 2006 GC
6) There is great knowledge and comfort that comes from the Plan of Happiness.
7) Mission leaders are chosen of God, and they are inspired in all things.
8) Giving two years from my family, friends, and home to serve the Lord is not a sacrifice, but an investment. (Definition of Missionary: A person who leaves their family for two years, or 18 months, so that other people's families can be together for eternity.)
9) Studies can make or break your mission.
10) It's never too late to gain a testimony of the Gospel.
11) Planning ahead is an act of faith, and it will always save you more time, money, and energy.
12) When you are doing exactly what you are supposed to each day, you are always feeling tired and you come home drained and feeling like your are going to pass out at the end of each day. As soon as you hit the bed at 10:30, your out like a light. Sleeping from 10:30pm to 6am every night feels only like ten minutes of sleep when the alarm goes off in the morning,
13) Missionaries are far from perfect. "Saint: A sinner, that keeps on trying" -Nelson Mandela quoted by Elder Dale G Renlund, April 2015 GC
14) Humidity is awful, and it amplifies both the heat and the cold.
15) Rain/Thunder storms are like clockwork during the summer time. It hits everyday at 4pm during the summer months. The lightning storms are just incredible here, especially the heat lightning. Tampa is the lightning capital of the world, and it can get pretty insane. Floridians are more scared of lightning than they are of alligators.
16) The best trainers in any field in the world are the ones who are diligent with practice, bold in their purpose, and unceasingly patient and forgiving. You never stop learning, if you think your done being trained, then think again. I have been placed with each companion for a certain reason, and I am so grateful for all of he amazing companions that I did have. (Whaley, Ronfeldt, Hicken, Wing, Ware, Stephens, and White) Thank you for the many memorable experiences, and I will never forget serving with each and one of you. I have been so blessed in my mission with such great companions.
17) When two Sandhills cranes come together, they mate for life and never separate. Plus, they can scare you to death when the are flying because of how big they are, and they sound like teradactyles. The local Native American name for a Sandhill crane is Wauchula.
18) Inspirational videos from the church are surprisingly some of the most effective ways to invite the spirit in strongly into any visit or lesson. (He Lives, Because of Him, Mountains to Climb, Moments that Matter Most)
19) Your testimony can never be debated. Defending your beliefs with a testimony is the most powerful thing anyone will ever hear a person do
20) Florida has enough farmland to sustain the United States. The church is the largest private land owner in the state of Florida, only topped by the government. It owns more than 2% of Florida.
21) If you're not progressing, then your are declining. We are always changing, whether it is deliberately or accidentally. You can either decide who you want to become and deliberately work toward the end, or you can just go with the flow and become whatever life makes of you.
22) It is impossible to serve two masters. There is a fence to sit on, but that fence is on Satan's property. He doesn't mind how long that you sit on that fence for. If he can't get you to do bad, than he will just get you to not do good.
23) Our purpose as members of the church is to invite others to come unto Christ. If we are extending those invitations, and following up, than we are being successful and doing our part. Without following up, a commitment is hollow. It would be like buying someone a concert ticket, and then them not using it. "Will you consider what it would mean to you if you could join the Prophet Mormon in saying, Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of a him to declare His word among His people, that they may have everlasting life. I am a witness that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and the savior of the world, it is my deep conviction, that he has called us to teach and testify in his kingdom. -McConkie
24) Florida being a flat state is relative to weather you're in a car or on a bike A small hill in Florida is really tough to bike up, and always make sure to lock you bike no matter where you put it. Whether it is on the bike rack, in the apartment, or even in the church. It will get stolen.
25) The Tampa bay does not get naturally deeper then twelve feet; and the Gulf of Mexico does not get naturally deeper then about forty feet.
26) Those who do not budget their money always overspend, and their money is gone within the first two weeks of the month.
27) Paying 10% of your tithing yields you 100% of God's blessings you're worthy to receive. It is also the greatest fire insurance that you can buy.
28) If we develop our personal spiritual filters for life, we will not need to worry about the wickedness of the world. As members we set apart on much higher standards. We will never do anything wrong, without having the warning of the Spirit first.
29) Many people who investigate the church have an average of seven strong contacts with the church before actually accepting and being baptized.
30) Me being in a mission, I am not just building the Lord's kingdom here, but the Lord has been building me.
31) Smiling and shaking someones hand you don't know has eternal consequences.
32) Its ok to park in someones lawn in Florida, no one has real grass here, it's just all weeds.
33) The importance of home teaching, and fulfilling my priesthood duty, family, and church callings.
34) Having the Book of Mormon and a Bible hand in hand while out walking and finding truly does help those we met to see how we use them together. And that we do believe in the Bible, that the Book of Mormon does not replace it. "For 179 years this book has been examined and attacked, denied and deconstructed, targeted and torn apart like perhaps no other book in modern religious history... And still it stands." -Jeffery R. Holland, Safety for the Soul, October 2009 GC
35) Grace of God. We are saved 'after' all that we can do, not 'because' of all that we can do. (President Uchtdorf). Christ is the only way possible that we can return to live with our loving Heavenly Father, there is no other way than through Him.
36) The greatest weapon we have against the adversary is the Spirit, which we can get through regular prayer, scripture study, and church attendance. "A morning prayer and an early search in the scriptures to know what we should do for the Lord can set the course of a day. We can know which task, of all those we might choose, matters most to God and therefore to us. I have learned such a prayer is always answered if we ask and ponder with childlike submission, ready to act without delay to perform even the most humble service." -Henry B. Eyring, This Day, April 2007 GC
37) Once you hit your year mark, you are always out "a little over a year" until you are on the plane home.

42) Take my compliments and criticism only from God, and no one else. His approval is much more important than anyone else's.

45) Some people investigate the missionaries more then they do the church.
46) Getting mail as a missionary is one of the greatest feelings.

50) "Meet the Mormons" was a lot better movie than what I had expected it to be.
51) Setting up and taking down chairs is a priesthood duty.

58) How to use the bus system efficiently.
59) To budget money wisely, and divide it into specific areas.
60) Steak & Shake and Chick-fil-A are really good.
61) Facebook is much different while keeping a missionary mind with everything.
62) There is a reason that church is three hours long and there are so many meetings and activites throughout the week. If it was anything else, a lot of people would go inactive so quickly.
63) During the summer months of Florida, you are either wet from the rain, or from sweating so much.
64) My faith is not based upon what blessings or miracles that I see or receive, but it is based on my Savior, Jesus Christ. "This precious and marvelous gift of faith, this gift from God our Eternal Father, is still the strength of this work and the quiet vibrancy of its message. Faith underlies it all. Faith is the substance of it all. - Gordon B. Hinckley, The Miracle of Faith, April 2001 GC

68) How to play Tetris while trying to load up things into a moving truck.
69) Attending the temple brings rich blessings. It is a place of peace where you can escape from all worldly things. There is more truth to be learned at the temple, and I need to make it a regularly thing to attend as often as circumstances allow.
70) The five covenants that we make in the temple are 1) Obedience, 2) Law of Sacrifice, 3) No Unholy practices, 4) Law of Chastity, and 5) Law of Consecration.
71) The weather in Florida is so unpredictable. The weather forecasts will change every thirty minutes or so.
72) Close to 80% of YSA members are less active, and 55% of returned missionaries go less active. I will not be one of those statistics.
73) I'm not ever going to buy a Toyota Carolla, a Chevy Malubu, or a Ford Focus. Also when you walking on the street so much, you become creative to different forms of walking. (Ex: Using my Chevalegs, Shoeburu, Lamborfeeties, F-2Feety)
74) Miracles have never stopped. They are around us each day, and in our own lives. We just need to recognize them more. "When the Lord said, “Lengthen your stride, quicken your pace, heighten your reach, widen your vision, and stretch your capacity,” he was in reality saying “expect a miracle,” for these are the stuff from which miracles are made." -Hartman Rector Jr. Following Christ to Victory, April 1979 GC
75) I've learned how to be both effective and efficient. You can do alot of things, but get nothing done.
76) Anti-mormon material brings converts into the church because they see that we don't really live and believe about all of the things that they read and hear. A lot of people go on the on internet just to lie, and there is no truth filter there.
77) God doesn't expect you to be perfect, He just expects us to perfectly try our best.
78) You will sometimes memorize a scripture with no effort on your part.
79) If you want to be an active member out here, then it takes a lot of work and diligence. Often times members live 20-40 minutes from the church, some of them even longer. 81) How to simplify and intensify, so that the Spirit will be there and his presence can be felt more strongly.
82) Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that is counted counts. We can't measure our success in numbers. It is isn't possible to measure the strength of ones testimony, or the love that they have for the people, or their Christlike attributes.
83) Asking inspired questions in the best way to start up conversations with people, showing that you truly do care for them as you listen. (Ex: How would you like to feel the Savior's love in your life more? How would you feel to be free from all of your guilt? Would you like to know how families can be together forever? When was the last time that you talked to God? What is God's role in your life?)
84) Youth need to learn for themselves the gospel is true as soon as possible. A testimony is like a toothbrush, they can use their parents, but it's much better for them to have their own.
85) Marriages are ordained of God only if it is between a man and a women. The laws may change in man's eyes, but they don't change in the eyes of God.
86) Some people don't know how to use an escalator.
87) Homeless people have the most colorful stories.
88) Nobody in Florida knows what a Carabiner is.
89) The majority of problems are solved with better communication. You cannot teach if there is contention between you and your companion. For the spirit will not be there to testify of the truth.

92) You won't find an answer to a question until you ask God. They will always be answered, but on the Lords timing.
93) Be proactive in all things, and not reactive. Just like recent converts, they have that light and desire to share everything that they know with everyone they talk with. They have a bright light about them.
94) I know that my mission was successful, and that as I continue doing the things I learned, that I will have a successful life as well.
95) Our Heavenly Father cherishes each of us as great worth. God's favorite role he plays in our lives is the Father.
96) Its hard to accept the fact that you're finishing your mission because it feels like this has been your whole life. “This is the most remarkable era in the history of the Church. This is something that has happened to us at this time that ranks with the great events that have happened in past history, like the First Vision, like the gift of the Book of Mormon, like the Restoration of the gospel, like all of the things that build that foundation for us to go forward and teach in our Father in Heaven’s kingdom” -L. Tom Parry, “Concluding Remarks” new mission presidents seminar, June 26, 2013
97) If we follow the council of the prophets of old and of today, then we need not fear.
98) Missions are hard, but there are definitely worth every moment of it. Not serving a mission would've been the biggest mistake of my life. “The greatest decision I ever made in my life was to give up something I dearly loved to the God I loved even more. He has never forgotten me for it. Learn from the past." -Thomas S. Monson, In Search of Treasure, April 2003 GC
99) I have a deep love for those that I have served and had the opportunity to meet here in Florida. There will always be a special place for them in my heart.
100) Jesus is the Christ. The only Begotten Son of God. The Savior and Redeemer of the world.

Re: No body's counting here!‏- July 13, 2015

Will you be able to email or read emails next Monday?
--As far as I know I should have time to write next Monday, but I'm not quite sure. I have my interview with President Cusick right at 11am, so it may be before or after that, and I'll have to have all of my bags packed. So crazy, I can't believe that it it this close already.

IF you have time answer these: (If not have an answer for when you get home :P  )
--I'll try to answer as many of these things as I can right now. :D Lots of questions I see.

What is the most spiritual thing you enjoyed on your mission?
--Tough questions. I don't know because I have had so many different experiences on my mission. Probably just because it's on my mind right now, but being able to go to the temple again last week and having the Spirit bring back to my remembrance all of the wonderful truths that are taught there. (John 14:26) Also with the many opportunities that I have had to give countless priesthood blessings, teaching people the amazing restored truths and preparing them for eternal life. Having the opportunity to baptized and confirm people members of the church. And hearing about how well that those I have grown close to are doing.

What is the most fun you had on your mission?
--Probably having ward or mission parties, and seeing missionaries and members interacting outside of church, and continuing to live the gospel and fellowship with people. On top of that, biking in the many different rain storms

What will you miss the most from your mission?
--I won't miss the flatness or the humidity. The thing that I am going to miss the most or the amazing people that I have met. There are so many people that have touched my heart, and I want to remain close to them. The other thing that I am going to miss is just not worrying about the cares of the world, and knowing what I am going to do each day. Get up and testifying of our Savior, Jesus Christ each day.

What do you look forward to coming home?
--Seeing my family of course. That is the number one thing that I am can't wait for. Plus going to the temple each week. There's all of the small things that missionaries can't do like hanging out with friends, being alone, going on dates, swimming, sleeping in, and many other things, but none of those things matter that much.

What plans and expectations do you have coming home?  ie: what do you think life should be like when you return?
--I expect to be about the same as my mission, but better because I get to be with my family. This is all that I currently know what to do. I will be sending my goals to you next week which contain a bunch of my plans that I have for my life. It will go along the lines of figuring out what I am going to do for a career, and how I am going to pay for schooling. Plus dating and eventually getting married in the temple. That I may become the father and husband that my Heavenly Father wants me to become.

Be ready to answer these questions when you get home:
What do you feel that you will need to do arriving home?
--Couple grand! lol. Books for school, and housing, transportation, new clothes, a job to pay for all of these things. Write my homecoming talk.

What will you need help with from Mom or Dad while we have time off work? (We are each taking a week off work to be with you.)
--Probably just taking time to sit down and talk about what the next steps of life will be fore me and how I can prepare for school and life. Showing me of the things that I will need to do for school and housing. Not doing them yourselves, but showing me how to do it. Maybe taking a trip up to Cedar to find a suitable place, or deciding if I am going to drive each day.

Are you ready to run in the mornings?
--Not exactly. I've only been running about 5 miles a week on the treadmill. But I will push myself to keep up with Kiera! :D

Anyone that you have goals to teach or inspire when you get home?
--Just being really good friends with nonmembers and less actives. Always inviting them to church activities, or just to hang out together. Tommy, and lots of investigators that I have met out here. Help my sisters to be able to serve full-time missions themselves. I know that Kiera wants to, but I'm not sure about Lexie and Lainee.

Any destinations or things that you want/ need to do when you get home?
--Lots of destinations that I want to go to. I want to bring the family back here to Florida to meet everyone here. We could also hit up DisneyWorld, Orlando Temple, Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, and the beaches. Also going out to Lake Powell, Sand hollow, the Cabin, and mountains nearby. I have lots of places that I want to go to. Plus the ground breaking of the Cedar City Temple, and open house of the Provo City Temple.

Know that for your homecoming-
-If you have opportunity- eat at the Airport in Salt Lake City as your time may be quick (depending on flights and airport time)to get to the Stake President Frei's office.  If you don't get to eat we will for sure go through a drive through and get you something to eat on the fly as you have had a long travel day.  So if that is the case- have in mind where you would want to stop.
-You are meeting with the Stake President Frei 8pm on Tuesday- the day that you arrive.
-Some family and friends may be at the house after to greet you.
-You will not be allowed in the house until cameras are set up to capture the homecoming of you with Candy.  So be patient.  Please refrain from petting/touching Diamond until AFTER you have hugged Candy.  I don't want her to feel 2nd best by any means.  (Dogs can do that ya- know.)
-Hunter Hammer is one of the youth speakers and the girls along with Bowen are doing a musical number.
--By girls, are you meaning Kiera, Lexie, and Lainee? And is there another speaker, or just me and Hunter? That's probably the thing that I am looking to least for coming home, is just giving my homecoming talk because I don't like public speaking.

No- no body here is counting down!
except Lainee ((who put the countdown app on my phone today!!! Now I know every day and every second!!!!))
except Lexie ((who is counting the number of days she gets to wallow in a double bed!))
except Kiera ((who is trying to get up running speed so she won't be schooled by you when you get back out! and trying to figure out how to get every ounce of your time before school
             starts!))
except Mom ((who can cry at the drop of the hat and both the tears and smile mean the same thing!!))
except Dad ((who asks each day how many days and then answers before anyone else can!! Then will deny that he's not counting!))
but maybe not Candy as we say "Are you ready Candy?  Chase is coming home soon."  and She cocks her head like she kinda knows what's happening but like we might be tricking her as Kiera has been driving the Blazer the last 2yrs and throwing her off!  Well, we think not really.  (who knows really?!)

Even though time is short, I exhort you to strongly keep your mission spirit alive and strong!  Keep that Elder White super busy!  He has a full year ahead of him and needs to keep the spirit burning strong as he sends a great companion to his own home town.  He knows the streets where you walk and the place he calls home.  Try not to give him reason to get home sick.  (I don't know if he is susceptible to that or not.)  He seems like such a fine young man and I am soo thrilled that you had the opportunity to spend your last transfers with him!  He looks like he has such a great go-get-em spirit!  I can't wait for you to meet his family!  Of coarse, I have invited them!!

Sorry if the responses a little bit short, we can talk more in depth about them when I get back. I wish that I had more time to write right now. But we've got to get going. Loves ya tons!!!

Power of the Book of Mormon!‏ - July 13, 2015

Dear Family and Friends,

Not a whole lot has happened since I last wrote on Thursday. Besides having two flat tires from getting nails in the tire, and walking in the rain. Although we did have some really awesome lessons with two investigators that we have recently started working with. Their names are Ashley and Genesis. They are both such awesome people, and I love going over and visiting with them in their home and teaching them about the Book of Mormon. They both have a Jehovah Witness background, but haven't been for a while. Ashley requested a Bible about four weeks ago, and when we went over to deliver that to her, we started teaching about the Book of Mormon and gave her a copy of that as well.  Since then, our lessons have been straight out of the Scriptures. We are able to help her receive answers to her many different questions, and show her where she can find them for herself. She is starting to be more open to the Book of Mormon as we show her how thy both fit perfectly together. Once she is able to find the answers, she is willing to change her life immediately to align it with God's will. With Genesis, she requested a missionary visit after meeting some Spanish missionaries on the street. Since then, we have taught her the Restoration and about the Book of Mormon. She loves learning about Christ teaching the people here in the America's, and seeing that he does love all of his people. I know that the Lord has been preparing them, along with many others that we are working with to receive the Restored gospel into their lives.

Speaking of the Spanish missionaries, we were biking along one of the major streets and I see three guys dressed in white shirts and ties riding on their bikes. We surprised them when we came biking up right behind them. I wonder what we all looked like with having five guys riding bikes in dress clothes, standing on the street corner. We talked to them for a brief second, and they told us that they just set a date with two referrals that we gave to them a few weeks ago. I was really excited to hear about that.

Sunday was a great day. Two, soon to be missionaries, Jake Heller and Sister Urbina gave their farewell talks in Sacrament meeting. They are both going to the Arizona, Phoenix mission, and they leave for the MTC this Wednesday! So to all of my family and friends in Arizona, be on the lookout for these two missionaries over the next 18-24 months! They are such great people!

I love you all so much, and I can't wait to see you all in a week. God Speed!

Love,
Elder Leavitt

4th of July + Temple Trip!!!‏ , July 9, 2015

Dear family and friends,

Right now, I am on a spiritual high, and that is because I just got back from going to the Orlando Temple. It was such a wonderful experiences and I loved it so much. I knew that I had missed going to the temple before I went, but once we got there, I didnt realize how much that I really did miss being able to go to the temple. It's such a great blessing to have gotten the opportunity to go while I am out here. There were many amazing truths that I learned, *(and also relearned because I forgot a bunch of it) and I can't wait to continue having these uplifting and spiritual learning experiences regularly when I get back. It has really helped me to see the eternal perspective of why we do the things that we do as members of Christ church, and to show me why I am a member of His church. I am so excited to get back to work because I now feel re energized and motivated to help everyone that I meet know how their families be be together for eternity.

Early on this week, we also had a fourth of July party at a members home. There was an awesome turnout of 90 people there. That is more than we usually get for Sacrament meeting each week. There were a few less actives members there, and we were able to get one of our investigators there after going through lots of work to try to find her a ride. Once we finally found her one, we then had to search for our own, otherwise we wouldn't have gone to it because of how far away that it is. They had a pool there for everyone to enjoy, and a great big water slide for both the kids and adults to go down. But the best part was the home cooked food. It has been such a long time since we have had anything homemade. Let me tell you, those grilled burgers were pretty good!  :)

Yesterday, Wednesday, was a really good day. We had six lessons in total, and each and everyone of them the Spirit was so strong, and the people we taught all had a sincere desire to learn the truths of the restored Gospel. They were filled with inspired questions, and we were able to answer many of them. It was so great! I love being a missionary so much!!

Talk to you all again on Monday! Love y'all!

Plan of Happiness- June 29, 2015

To my most amazing Family and Friends,

This week has been such a great week, but I feel like I don't remember much of what happened. The first half of the week went really well, and we were on track to hit our goal of gettign 30+ lessons for the week, but the last three days everyone canceled on us and things fell through. We almost made it though. Just got to keep on pushing and stretching ourselves more and more each week.

On Tuesday, we had a member that is preparing to go out on his mission come and spend the entire day with us. He leaves in three weeks for Phoenix Arizona. We had such a great and successful day with him as we contacted many people. We weren't used to having a car to get to places quickly, so our planning wasn't quite the best. You can get so much more done when you can travel from place to place so much quicker than busing, biking, or walking. We did do a lot of walking this week because of bike problems and having flat tires. We have received some really solid church headquarters this week. Most of them wanting a Bible, but then we were able to introduce the Book of Mormon to them and set up a return appointment with all four referrals. I just loving doing the Lord's work each day and finding those who are truly prepared to receive the Gospel.

Really not too much to talk about this week. Other then how much that I love the Plan of Salvation. On Saturday night, we saw a motorcycle accident that happened where someone had died. The body was still in the road at the time. It just goes to show how fragile that life really is. I had just listened to the talk the Plan of Happiness by Elder Packer, and then we talked about it again in Priesthood class yesterday. I am so grateful for this wonderful knowledge that brings so much peace and comfort. I love it so much!

Love,
Elder Leavitt

PS. I will be going to the Orlando Temple next Thursday so you won't get any emails from me on Monday!  Love ya bunches.

In response to last weeks email.

I don't know if I have ever told you how much that I really love you! You're truly such and inspiring and amazing mother! You make me laugh so much, especially about feeling like an old biblical man awaiting your future grandkids. :D And getting me gifts for when I become a father. haha. Your grandchildren are going to love you so much! I just know it already. Although there are still a few years before that happens. :)

That is so cool that they did a XC running camp this year and that Lexie and Lainee got to go. What did they do for it? Just training future runners and doing drills with them? I will be just as sore as Lexie was because I haven't ran in ages. I'm gonna be struggling to keep up with Kiera. Tell her she'll have to go easy on me the first two weeks or so.

We are going to have to go and play pickle ball in the mornings together. That will be so much fun! I would say he forfeited, so it would be a win for you. But you'll have to have a rematch with him. It sounds like everyone is already going to be really busy for when I get back, and that's great. Girls camp for Lexie, and the parade for Kiera. Can't wait to see the awesome float.

I don't have anything funny or jokes to make everyone laugh like Jacob did. That's such a great idea what he did. I love it. I'm stressed out about my homecoming talk, and I still don't like public speaking. That part about me hasn't changed yet.

One of the goals that Elder White and I have is to hit 30 lessons in one week. That is what we are pushing towards. Last week we had 28 lessons, and this past week we had 26. We'll see what we can hit this week with it being the fourth of July. Then next week is the temple trip! I'm so excited about that. I won't be having my preparation day on Monday because of it, and it will be on Thursday. So don't be surprised if you don't hear from me on next week until the afternoon on Thursday.

I hope that you were able to get my email from last week. We had to do it at the library because our apartment complex computers were closed down last week. I was having problems with the wifi and the emails last week, so hopefully it all worked out.

Love ya tons!

Elder & Sister Gubler!!!‏ - June 29, 2015

I don't know if you have recieved the July ensign yet, but here is an article about Lonnie and Nancy Gubler. I saw it about two weeks ago but I forget to send it to you.

One Couple Serving, One Family learning

By Mindy Anne Leavitt

Recipe for a miracle: two couples, two inspired leaders, one question, and one knock on the door.

Lonne and Nancy Gubler of Santa Clara, Utah, sat in their stake president’s office, stunned. The stake president had just told them that he felt inspired that they needed to serve a mission and wanted them to submit their mission papers as soon as possible. While the Gublers had considered serving a full-time mission together--in 10 years or so--they felt unprepared to do so at age 48.

Their stake president had been trying to ignore the prompting that they should be called to serve, knowing how young they were. When the feeling wouldn’t be quelled, he finally went to Lonne’s father, a former stake president himself, and asked if it would even be feasible for his son and daughter-in-law to serve. “We’ll do whatever it takes to make it possible,” he replied. Satisfied with that answer, the stake president called the Gublers in for a meeting, where he expressed his feeling that they should serve a mission.

The Gublers exercised their faith and responded to their stake president’s charge. They received a call to serve in the New Zealand Auckland Mission. Their call didn’t specify what they would be doing, and as neither of them had ever left home or served a mission in their youth, they were understandably nervous.

Through a series of miracles, they were able to get their finances in order for the time they’d be serving. All three of the Gublers’ children were grown and married, their two daughters living nearby. Lonne’s father, a self-employed rancher like his son, agreed to oversee the Gublers’ own farm and ranch, with their sons-in-law taking over the work, allowing the Gublers to leave for 18 months.

Sister Gubler explains, “Leaving our children and grandchildren was probably the hardest thing we have ever done, but we knew the Lord had a plan for us and we were ready to serve Him with all we had!

“We felt very inadequate in the MTC, placed in a district with former mission presidents, stake presidents, and a patriarch. We were just a small-town couple who had always served in the Church, but never to that degree. We didn’t know our scriptures as well as we should have, so we studied hard and gave it the best we had!”

Armed with that preparation and the assurance they felt regarding the Lord’s plan for them, they set off on their missionary service.

An Unexpected Question
Meanwhile, halfway around the world sat another stunned couple, Reuben and Nara Hayward of Gisborne, New Zealand. They had not been active in the Church for over 11 years and hadn’t taught their two sons anything about the gospel, when one day their eight-year-old son, Hikurangi, asked about the meaning of life. “It came out of nowhere,” Reuben recalls. “There was no reason for him to want to know about that.”

Still, the Haywards knew they had to give their son an answer, and they didn’t want to withhold from him their knowledge of the gospel. “We both felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility to teach him the truth,” Nara explains. “Even though we weren’t active, we never denied the truthfulness of the gospel. We just didn’t think the Church was something we needed in our lives at that time.”

In the days following their son’s unexpected question, the Haywards considered what to tell him. The couple discussed contacting the bishop and getting in touch with the missionaries, but didn’t.

A few days later there was a knock on the Haywards’ door. There, scared to death and fresh off the plane from the United States, stood the Gublers. They had been sent by the Haywards’ bishop, who knew the family--and also knew they were obstinately opposed to receiving missionaries. For more than a decade, Reuben had been chasing missionaries and any other Church-related visitors off their doorstep. “Reuben was ruthless to anybody that came to their home,” Sister Gubler explains.

But for Nara, it was a sign. “When the Gublers came to our home it was kind of another wake-up call for us. We didn’t call them, but there they were. It was the first time in a long time that I allowed myself to feel the Spirit testify of our Heavenly Father’s love for us. It was no coincidence that they called on us that day, and I knew the moment they walked up my driveway that they were inspired by the Lord.” Reuben must have felt so too, because for the first time ever, he allowed missionaries to come inside his home. But, as Sister Gubler says, “It wasn’t about us--it was all about timing.”

A Special Connection
The Haywards felt a special connection to the Gublers right away, asking if the missionary couple would come back every week to teach their two sons. The Gublers happily agreed. Sister Gubler taught the Haywards’ sons, Whaimutu and Hikurangi, while Elder Gubler subtly tried to relate the lessons to the Haywards themselves.

After a few lessons, the Gublers asked if they could pick the children up for church. They were surprised when the Haywards said that they would come to church together, as a family. Little by little, the Haywards’ sons soaked up the message of the gospel and the Haywards were reminded of truths they had learned long ago.

Finally, the Gublers decided to ask the Haywards for permission to baptize their sons. Reuben shocked them again with his answer: “Yes, they can be baptized, but I want to be the one to do it.”

Over the following months, the Haywards worked to obey the Word of Wisdom and overcome other issues to prepare themselves and their sons for their sons’ baptisms. They made sure to invite Reuben’s parents to the baptism, not telling them that it would be Reuben performing the ordinance. Throughout the Haywards’ 11 years of inactivity, Reuben’s parents, devout members, had never given up on the hope of their son’s family returning to the Church. They had fasted weekly and prayed daily that Reuben and his family would come back, pleading with the Lord to send someone who might be able to touch their hearts.

The day of the baptism, Reuben’s parents were overjoyed, to say the least, to realize that not only were their grandsons getting baptized but their son and daughter-in-law had returned to Church activity and were working toward becoming an eternal family. Similar to Alma the Elder’s experience, their prayers and fasting in behalf of their children were answered (see Mosiah 27:14).

A few months after Reuben baptized his sons, the family was sealed in the Hamilton New Zealand Temple. Since their reactivation, two of Nara’s brothers have also returned to the Church, and her mother has completed the temple ordinances for her husband and been sealed to him. Both Reuben and Nara have now served in leadership positions in their ward. Reuben’s parents were inspired to serve a mission themselves, hoping that they might reach another couple’s wayward son or daughter, as the Gublers had with theirs.

The Lord Knows All
Two couples’ lives were changed forever--thanks to the Gublers’ inspired stake president and their willingness to serve, and the Haywards’ inspired bishop and their willingness to change.

Sister Gubler says, “We are so thankful the Lord put the Haywards in our path. He knows all. He puts us in places for a reason.

“We are also thankful for a stake president who followed his promptings to call us on our mission. We know the power of couple missionaries! They are needed so much! We didn’t know how we could ever leave our business or our family, but we knew the Lord would provide a way. And He did. It is nothing short of a miracle.”

That's too bad I won't be able to make it to his homecoming talk.
We'll have to meet up later on to catch up on old times.

That's such a great picture of those two, and I will keep them both in
my prayers.

Happy Father's Day!!!‏ -June 22, 2015

Dear Family and Friends,

This week has just been full of many small miracles. Even with having
to drop all of the baptismal dates we had set and also with Ckova and
Christy leaving for their vacation. We have several lessons with them
this past week before the left to go and be with family for the next
month or so. Sadly, I won't be able to see them again as they get back
in late July, but we are going to try having some Skype lessons with
them while they are gone so that they will be on track for baptism
once they get back. We are also going to have missionaries go and
visit with them as well while they are staying with family. I am going
to miss them so much, especially Christy because she just loved
learning about Christ and his teachings. We made sure to play a few
games to keep her entertained and to remember the commandments easier.

The past few weeks we have started tracting again, and last week we
had the commitment to knock 30 doors a day, and this week it is 40
doors. Elder White and I both have a hard time with knocking doors
because neither one of us likes it to much. The reason that tracting
is being brought back in the mission is because too many missionaries
were wasting their time doing activites that weren't effective. To me,
tracting isn't the most effective way at all. It always seems like we
find people who will be willing to listen, and we have such a great
first contact with them. But after that, we are never able to get in
contact with them again, or they never answer the door. We haven't
once yet hit the number of doors that we have been committed to, there
just doesn't seem to be enough time in the day when we have set
teaching appointments and are always biking from one to the next. On
the days that we have tried our best to knock as many doors as
possible, we are able to see many blessings that come from just being
obedient to the mission leaders and trying our best. For example, just
last night we were trying a few potentials but they weren't home, so
we started tracting the complex we were in. I felt like we should
leave and go try somewhere else, and we decided to take the long way
out of the complex. That was when we met Danielle as she was trying to
take groceries into the house with a sick child in her hands. We
stopped immediately and helped her to carry them in, then we taught
her all about the restoration and the Book of Mormon, and now we have
another lesson with her Wednesday afternoon. It is so amazing to see
the hand of the Lord and being an answer to someone's prayers.

Thursday we had interviews with President Cusick. They always go
pretty smoothly, and we didn't really talk about too much since we
will be having more discussions with each other  in the next month. I
just love President Cusick and Sister Cusick so much. I am so blessed
to have such great and inspired people who answered the call of the
Lord to serve.

Saturday was a great day. We had eight lessons scheduled, and only one
of them canceled since they weren't feeling to great. Another great
miracle that happened was that one of our appointments feel through
last night, and we were both quite hot and thirsty from biking around
in the heat. We decided to head to the church to grab some water, but
on the way there we saw a storm approaching and we wanted to watch it
come in, so we went to the top of a nearby parking garage. We were
getting ready to leave, when we stopped to talk to a couple that were
also up there. One of them is a Buddhist, and the other is an atheist.
The atheist said that he was supposed to go to a Bible study, but
decided to skip out, and that was when we showed up.  We ended up
going over the plan of salvation and were able to talk in depth about
so many different things pertaining to the pre-earth life, the spirit
world, and the three kingdoms of glory. We talked to them for about an
hour or so, and now tonight we are going to take them on a church
tour, give them a Book of Mormon, and send them to the YSA family home
evening.

Happy Father's Day Dad! I love you tons!

Love, Elder Leavitt

P.s. I didn't send his out to everyone like I usually do, so you might
have to forward it to a few people if they want it, thanks.
